No secret that–for most of us–January is cold. Very cold. And there’s nothing quite as comforting as a a great breakfast or brunch to start the day.
Cologne offers a wide range of breakfast places. You can find a lot of bakeries on literaly every corner. The bakery “Merzenich” is one of Colognes most traditional bakeries and has excellent breads and sweets. For Low Budget Travellers the “Backwerk” is an attractive choice. It´s a discount bakery store with a great choice of everything. But one of the best bakeries in town is located on the Ehrenstrasse. It is called “Bäckerei Zimmermann”. Check the Video (in german) to get some impressions.
Bakeries are great, if you want to get a snack to go or buy some food for having breakfast in bed. Most of the bakeries do have some seating places, but these are not very cosy and comfortable. If you want to enjoy your breakfast in a great venue, then here´s our GoPink! TOP 3 Breakfast Hotspots!
TOP 1 “CAFÉ RICO”
The Rico is known for its lively, relaxed and cosy atmosphere. Innovative drinks, friendly service and the good quality of the entire range assure a harmonious picture.
The breakfast offer, quiche, sandwiches, cakes and tarts, as well as tasty hot drinks and the good wine assortment are also to be emphasized. You can sit inside and outside and especially the gay scene uses the sidewalk also as a catwalk.^^ They have a great variety on tea and coffe, continental breakfast and really great cake. The prices are a bit higher, but in relation to other venues and to the great quality of food, they are quite fair. They offer all kinds of egg varieties, fresh fruit and of course bred specialities. Check it out! You will not regret it.
TOP 2 “SALON SCHMITZ”
Salon Schmitz is right on the Aachener Strasse, surrounded by other great cafés and restaurants. In the summertime you can sit outside and enjoy the vibrant city. It is a busy place on a busy street. You should like that. The food is great! And the design awesome.
The Salon Schmitz is a café with lounge area in the style of the 50s and 60s. Here, danish design classics from the 1950s meet german furniture design from the 1960s. This mixture of clear forms with traditional elements offers guests an unmistakable ambience in Cologne’s Belgian quarter.
In addition to a large selection of drinks, you can order various dishes – from savoury to sweet, warm or cold, large or small – in the butcher’s shop, right next door. These will then be served at your place.
Here you can start days, spend lunch breaks and end evenings. On weekends you can even enjoy almost 24 hours of pleasure – in the basement you will find the Club Coco Schmitz, an event location with changing events that not only feeds night owls but also those who don’t have enough after their last drink in the salon.
TOP 3 “CAFÉ ERA”
The Era Café is located right in the City Centre. It´s a café, a bar and they also serve good breakfast and snacks. We especially like the atmosphere there and it´s one of cologne´s most popular gay venues. The food quality is not as high as at the other TopRated Venues, but therefore the prices are extremly fair and the waitors are often very cute. 🙂 We especially like the great tea assortment, which also offers a very good Darjeeling tea. All in all the ERA is one of our favorite places in town.
